Willmore Wilderness Park is one of Alberta's largest protected wilderness areas, located just south of Grande Cache. Home to more than 750 kilometres of backcountry trails, the park features rugged mountain landscapes, alpine meadows, and forested valleys. Popular with experienced hikers, backpackers, and horseback riders, it offers a true backcountry experience and the opportunity to spot local wildlife.

One of Canada's most legendary ultramarathons, the Canadian Death Race is an iconic event that challenges athletes each year to test their endurance. Race options include the full 188 km Ultra, the 42 km Near Death Marathon, relay teams, and even a kids' race. Beginning at Central Park, the 118 km course starts and finishes on a 4200-foot plateau, crosses three mountain summits, includes over 17 000 feet of elevation change, and features a river crossing at Hell's Gate Canyon.

Grande Cache offers trails for every skill level. Easy to moderate routes include the Lakes Trail to Victor Lake and Grande Cache Lake, plus Ambler Mountain, known for its alpine wildflowers. For a greater challenge, Mount Louie, Mount Stearn, and Mount Hamell are among the region's most rewarding summit hikes.

Grande Cache is home to a variety of stunning waterfalls, each offering its own unique scenery. Twin Falls, Eaton Falls and Muskeg Falls are among the area's most popular destinations, while Kakwa Falls is well worth the drive for those looking to explore farther.

Spend an afternoon on Grande Cache Lake, just five minutes from town. With a convenient boat launch and easy access to the water, it's an ideal destination for kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding while taking in the surrounding mountain landscape. Victor Lake is another peaceful option, as motorized boats are not allowed on this lake.

Cast a line at some of Grande Cache's most popular fishing destinations. Grande Cache Lake is stocked with rainbow trout, while the Smoky River is known for mountain whitefish and trout. For a quieter setting, Victor Lake is another popular spot to spend a day on the water.

Located near Grande Cache, Sulphur Gates offers impressive views where the Smoky and Sulphur rivers meet between towering cliffs. A short walking trail leads to viewpoints overlooking the river valley and nearby mountains. With easy access from town, it's a worthwhile stop for visitors looking to experience some of the area's most dramatic scenery.

Pierre Grey's Lakes Provincial Park is one of the area's most scenic destinations for a day outdoors, located just minutes from Grande Cache. The park features several mountain lakes that offer opportunities for canoeing, kayaking, fishing, picnicking, and paddling, with shoreline access and mountain views throughout. Its easy accessibility and variety of recreational activities make it a popular destination.
